The beginnings He began to study music with the help of his father Nicola, a gang instructor. Very young, he began studying violin , and managed to win a scholarship for the conservatory S. Pietro a Maiella in Naples. He then studied violin , organ , piano and orchestra conducting . He then graduated in composition and conducting. The hard teaching received at the conservatory and at the San Carlo theater greatly benefited him. He started his career right at the San Carlo as a director in 1908 with ‘ Aida by Verdi . From 1911 to 1914 he became director of the Italian comedy opera Caramba-Scognamiglio making his debut at the Politeama Rossetti in Trieste . This allowed him to start an intense activity, directing works, especially by Franz Lehár , making himself known in Italy but also abroad: conducted by the impresario Walter Mocchi at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires , he was noticed by Enrico Caruso who proposed to him follow him to New Yorkfor two concerts at the Metropolitan in March 1918 and for a concert tour in other cities of the United States . At the San Carlo theater he performed alternately with Pietro Mascagni, with whom he made a profound friendship. He also worked with Giacomo Puccini , Umberto Giordano , Ottorino Respighi and Richard Strauss . Success On April 5, 1921 , in the presence of the author, he directed a memorable Manon Lescaut by Puccini at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome . The performance that led him to success took place on 10 January 1922 with the representation of Falstaff by Verdi always at the Teatro Costanzi. The criticism of the time was unanimous in recognizing “fine elegance and deep feeling”, “a passionate and exuberant guide, clarity of rhythms and passionate impetus in the melodic fullness”; admired were “the wide, eloquent joke, the sure attacks, the admirable intuition, the magnificent communication, the warmth all southern that reminded Leopoldo Mugnone”. He repeated the same success with the performance of the Madama Butterfly , also in 1921 and the Carmen played by Gabriella Besanzoni . On March 2, 1922 he also directed The Knight of the Rose, recent production of Strauss. His execution was judged superior even to that of 1911 directed by the same author. He prepared and directed the musical commentary of the film Theodora and on April 12th he directed the first performance of Isabella Orsini by Renato Brogi . In South America He then left for South America to work at the Colòn in Buenos Aires, where he directed, among other things, Dolores by Tomas Breton, La Scuola del Villaggio, by Felix Weingartner, and Giulietta e Romeo by Riccardo Zandonai. This last work was a great success and was replicated with the same success at the Teatro Massimo in Rio de Janeiro . Also at the Colòn he conducted in first run Fior di Neve by Costantino Gaito. In 1923 he returned to Italy for the lyric season of the Teatro Regio di Parma. During this season he received more than positive reviews from Bruno Barrili and Renzo Martini. The former stated that his “sharp and energetic wand” had succeeded in enhancing the few artistically valid elements of Meyerbeer’s Huguenots; the latter recognized to him only the triumph of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut. After the season in Parma he returned to the Colón where he successfully directed Manon by Jules Massenet , The Compagnacci di Riccitelli, The Furies of Arlecchino and Nazdah of Athos Palma; these last two in absolute first performance. Also at the Colón he performed in a concert and directed in the first performance the Notturno and Rondo fantastic of Pick-Mangiagalli and the Ancient Dances and Arie for Respighi’s lute. On 7 September 1924 in Rio de Janeiro, he directed in the first performance Saldunes by Brazilian musician Leopoldo Miguez, later replied to Sao Paulo. The return to Italy, in Europe and the career at the Metropolitan Opera Later he was asked to the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona , where he directed Sister Beatrice of Antonio Marqués and Madama Butterfly , in memory of Giacomo Puccini who had just passed away. On April 29, 1925 he directed the Politeama of Florence for the first performance of the Cena delle Beffe di Giordano and in November the first performance at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna of “La cena delle beffe”. He also worked at Covent Garden , where he worked for over thirty years performing over one hundred performances. In 1926 he directed Mefistofele by Arrigo Boito and L’Heure espagnole by Maurice Ravel . In1929 directs the recovery in the Royal Opera House in London of Norma with Rosa Ponselle . It was then noticed by the impresario Giulio Gatti Casazza , who offered him a writing for the Metropolitan in New York , where in november 1926 he debuted with the jewels of the Madonna of Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari with Giovanni Martinelli and then directed Rigoletto with Giuseppe De Luca and Giacomo Lauri-Volpi , Madama Butterfly with Beniamino Gigli , La bohème with Gigli, Lucia di Lammermoor with Ezio Pinza , Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, in December The Force of Destiny with Ponselle, Martinelli, Pinza and Lawrence Tibbett , in 1927 the New Year Holiday Concert, The Barber of Seville with De Luca, Amelita Galli-Curci and Pinza, Il trovatore , Gianni Schicchi , Boris Godunov with Fyodor Chaliapin and Tosca , in 1928 The swallow with Lucrezia Bori and Gigli, Norma, Aida and Ernani , in 1929 La traviata , Andrea Chénier andThe girl of the West , in 1930 The precious ridicules of Felice Lattuada , in 1931 Iris and L’oracolo by Franco Leoni and in 1935 La serva padrona . The master directed 487 representations of the Met. In this period he was a friend and supporter of Guglielmo Marconi , and was the first to collaborate in the experiments in London on musical transmission through the ether. For the first time he directed the Turandot by Puccini at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele in Rimini , deserving other enthusiastic praises from the critics. Then began a period of intense work activity. In 1938 he was appointed an academic of Santa Cecilia and a life advisor . He worked mainly in Rome, at the Opera Theater . In 1938 he directed the first performance at the Baths of Caracalla of Lohengrin with Tito Gobbi , in 1939 he directed the replica in the Royal Opera of “Andrea Chénier”, in 1940 the revival of Elettra , in 1941 the revival of Giulietta and Romeo with Magda Olivero , in 1942 the first representation of Arabellaand the replica of “Il barbiere di Siviglia”, in 1944 the premiere of “Danza dei sette veli”, ballet by Aurelio Milloss, with music by Johann Strauss II . and the filming of ” The creatures of Prometheus “, in 1945 the shooting in the Opera House of “Aida”, in 1947 the first performance at Caracalla of “Madama Butterfly”, in 1948 the revival in the Baths of Caracalla of “Aida” with Boris Christoff , in 1950 the filming of “Aida” in the Opera House with Maria Callas and Ebe Stignani ,1955 the shooting in Caracalla of “Lucia di Lammermoor” with Virginia Zeani and Giuseppe Di Stefano , in 1957 the revival in the Opera House of “La fanciulla del West” with Olivero and Lauri Volpi and in 1959 the recovery in Caracalla of ” Rigoletto “with Zeani and Cornell MacNeil . At the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in 1942 he directed Andrea Chénier and Madama Butterfly with Mafalda Favero and Gobbi and in April 1943 La fanciulla del West and Il cavaliere della rosa with Italo Tajo . From 1948 to 1945 he was appointed director of the Italian opera in Cairo , a position that did not deprive him of carrying out his activities in theaters all over the world and to participate for eight consecutive years in the opera season of the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels . At the Teatro Verdi in Trieste in 1957 he directed Il trovatore with Leyla Gencer and Ettore Bastianini , in 1960 Carmen with Renata Scotto and La traviata with Alfredo Kraus .
