[Cammell Laird Shipbuilders Birkenhead] c.1948 Manuscript “Shipyard Diary” of Notes Regarding Naval Shipbuilding and Maintenance A bound album containing 49 pages (sides) of manuscript notes, together with 6 pages of typescript and three unused specimen dockyard inspection forms. The album seems to have been put together in 1948 (the typescript is dated August 30th 1948) and the manuscript pages are variously dated with a date, day and month which correlate to 1948. The manuscript pages appear to be a series of 11 lecture/shipyard visit notes, all on naval topics, with various rough line drawings and diagrams interspersed throughout. They comprise: “Talk by Mr Lake on “Ark Royal” Erection” – The text largely refers to the armour plating and welding of the hull and armour box of the aircraft carrier which was laid down in 1935 and sunk in 1941 30 miles from Gibraltar. After her sinking whilst on tow to Gib, there was much criticism regarding her construction which were proved to be design flaws. “Submarine Refits – Talk by Mr Cook With Visits to “Alaric” and “Tudor”” – It notes that a normal submarine refit is carried out about 18-24 months after completion, and goes on to explain the process of a sub coming in for a refit, the order that things are removed from the ship, when an officer has to be present, the process of servicing and refitting the vessel etc. HMS Alaric was launched in February 1946, so would seem to have been in for her first refit. “Visit with Mr Harris (Inspector of Iron Works) To The Smithery and Welding Bay – South Yard” “Talk By Mr Harris on The Arrangement of Work” – It notes how the teams of platers operated and interestingly mentions that there was no fully indentured apprenticeship scheme, with lads being taken on as helpers to the platers and after 5 years taken on as “journeymen platers” “Visit To Welding Bay – Talk By Mr Day” – A technical talk on the various methods of welding which were employed by the yard as well as the different types of work for which they were needed. “Visit To Mould Loft – Talk By Mr Allen (Foreman in Charge)” – we’re getting really technical here, but appears to regard the use of 8’x4’ three-ply board as a template for the plates and a practice not employed by John Brown’s shipbuilding yard. “Visit to D.O. – Talk By Mr Withy On Drawing Office Proceedure” – Basically how the Drawing Office operated “Talk in D.O. By Armour Expert Mr Cox” – The various methods and techniques of armour plate construction “Talk By Commander Armstrong (Adm. Eng. Overseer)” – A more general talk regarding ship procurement, starting with what type of vessel is required by the navy and working back with the choices of design required to build the ship desired. “Talk By Mr Partridge A.E.O.” – All things electrical “Talks By Mr Purvis P.S.O. on a P.S.O.’s Duties” In addition there is a 6 page typescript carbon copy bound-in dated August 30th 1948 titled “Notes on Merchant Shipping” and in addition at the end, there are three specimen Admiralty forms (also bound-in) which relate to shipyard work and inspections. They are titles thus: “Report of Inspection” 16pp (Form D.-448, May 1946 Revision) “Report of Inspection” 4pp (Form D.-448, Dec. 1935 Revision which looks like it was printed in Dec. 1942) “Report of Progress” 2pp (Form D.-120, September 1943) The binding is home made and the inside of the hardback front cover has been inscribed “D.H. Hobbs Shipyard Diary Cammel Lairds Berkinhead”[sic]. Approx. 215x335mm., occasional soiling and light spots, some minor wear/rubbing, though overall in good condition. However the most remarkable thing is that even though it is over 75 years old, the diary still has a distinct smell of old marine oil or diesel!
