JAPANESE TACHI SWORD A powerful cutting & slashing Japanese horse sword. The Japanese Tachi sword, the early predecessor to the later Uchigatana or what is now commonly referred to as a Katana, was by far the most popular sword between the years 900 and 1596. During this period the dominant method of warfare was mounted on horseback, and so the Tachi Katana, being a flowing curved sword, was particularly suited for such sabre sword cutting and slashing. This was the Japanese cavalry sword and like the standard Katana, could be wielded with a single hand from horseback or while fighting on foot could be used as a two handed sword, generating huge power. Highly versatile, the Tachi even more so than the modern Katana design was revered as both a Japanese cavalry sabre and a formidable infantry saber. The most valuable part of any sword is its blade, with this folded steel Katana blade certainly forming a high core standard of this fully functional and battle ready sword saber. Forged with folded steel, which is a mixture of 1045 soft steel, 1060 high carbon steel, manganese spring steel and many more smaller portions of other steels. This mixture is then folded multiple times to remove impurities, creating many hundreds of individual steel layers, finally producing arguably the best sword-making steel available, a technique renowned for smithing Japanese Katana blades. Further promoting perfection, is the very difficult process of clay tempering the blade. This process precisely facilitates hardening of the blade’s edge, while leaving the blade’s core and spine softer and thus resilient. Definitely a marker of advanced Japanese sword making technology and visibly identifiable on this sword’s blade. The beautiful brown-grain lacquered, hardwood scabbard, along with premium decorative fittings complement the blue Katana handle nicely. And the hardwood, wrapped with real stingray-skin leather & blue polyester cord form a traditional and very effective Japanese Samurai handle grip.
