Here we have a vintage serigraph by listed artist Harry Shokler (1896-1978). This piece depicts fishing boats in a New England harbor. It is signed and dated in the lower left corner. The entire work with frame measures 20 3/4″ by 25 1/2″, the mat cut out measures 13″ by 16″. The piece has been completely restored with a new acid free mat, new UV filtering glass and the original frame being refinished. The serigraph itself has retained all of the original bold colors. The last four photos show the work out of the original frame and mat. At the very top of the serigraph you can see a bit of tape residue and a small tear not anywhere near the image. A striking piece that is ready to hang. Harry Shokler was born 1896 in Cincinnati and studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy. After serving in the armed forces in World War I, he won a traveling fellowship from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts that allowed him to spend several years painting in Europe and North Africa. His work during this period culminated in successive one-man shows in Parisian venues including the Grand Palais des Champs Elysee, the Galerie de Marsan, and the Salon des Beaux Arts. In 1928, he returned to the United States and exhibited in New York at Grand Central Art Galleries and at the National Academy of Design. Harry Shokler is known as an American Impressionist painter and as a pioneer of the art of serigraphy. Exhibiting in over fifty one-man exhibitions throughout the country and abroad, his work can be found in numerous museums and private collections: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Collection of Fine Art, the Philadelphia and Syracuse Museums of Art, and the Carnegie Institute and the Salon des Beaux Arts in Paris. Shokler had a successful career as an oil painter and is well known for his American Regionalist landscape, city and harbor scenes. As a teacher at the Brooklyn Museum of Art School, Shokler further developed the technique of silkscreen printmaking to the point where it was accepted by art authorities all over the world as a new art form. Shokler wrote the popular seminal publication, the Artist’s Manual for Silk Screen Printmaking (1946), which is still used as a teaching aid today. Shokler was a member of the Silk Screen Group, and served as president of the National Serigraph Society. Shipping weight, well packed, is 8 lbs.
