eBay New-Old-Stock Suntour XC Silver Quill Stem with 25.4 mm clamp (85 mm)…Still in Original Packaging Thank you for your interest in this item and please visit our store for other offerings. We have very reasonable shipping terms and combine orders to save money (for customers) on shipping costs. We also maintain customer friendly return/refund/exchange policies. Product Description: This offering is for a new-old-stock Suntour XC mountain bike style quill stem (Model MS-1400) with a polished silver finish. I don’t see any date coding marks on the stem, but catalog references indicate this stem was an early to mid 80’s model coming out of Japan. Some of it’s more prominent design features and specs include the following… Body length: 85 mm (measured from a profile view of the stem body as a straight line that extends from the center of the quill to the center of the bar clamp) Body angle: 115 degrees (or said another way…a 25 degree rise) Quill length: 70 mm (the distance between the limit line and the top of the quill…the total length of the quill is 130 mm) Clamp: 25.4 mm (fairly common sizing for many vintage flat or riser bars…or 22.2 mm with shims) Quill diameter: 22.2 mm (common size compatible with most 1″ threaded forks) Weight: 392 grams (per our digital postal scale) This would appear to be a very good quality vintage quill stem that was originally designed for mountain bike or hybrid style bikes…given the aforementioned positive rise and bar clamp specifications. There is also the dual M6 allen bolt design that anchors the bars to the stem, which has to be among the strongest clamp designs in it’s class (and for this era). Please also note the somewhat unique body/quill design. The stem body is made from a good quality aluminum alloy with a hollow center section. While the quill is made from a hardened chromoly steel, as is the wedge, for added strength and durability. The drawback (of course) is the weight at nearly 400 grams, but I suppose that is the trade-off for a vintage stem that likely enjoys an extremely low failure rate. I originally acquired a handful of these Suntour stems and all of them are still packaged in their original Suntour branded cardboard box (and wrapped in a plastic bag inside the box). So the cosmetic condition is still nice overall…with only light shopwear from 30+ years of storage time.
