DESCRIPTION: Original painting by listed American artist MARK HAWORTH (Born: 1952, Texas). Panoramic Texas landscape. Oil on canvas. In its original solid wood frame with gilt finish and linen liner. All original. Signed lower left “Haworth”. CONDITION: Painting: The painting is in excellent original condition. No damage and no significant wear. No restorations / repairs / touch-ups. No cracks or chips to the paint. No missing paint or losses. No loose or flaking paint. No scuffs/abrasions. No gouges, scratches, dents, pokes. No stains or discolorations. No slackness to the canvas. Clean as found. No grime. No cigarette residue or odors. Frame, etc.: The frame is in excellent original condition. No damage and no significant wear. No restorations / repairs / touch-ups. No splits, chips, cracks, dings, dents, separations, bruises. No scuffs, abrasions, gouges. No significant scratches or rubs. There are some scattered superficial irregularities to the gilt finish. I am not sure if these are faux antique effect original to the frame or the result of light handling wear. See photos. I don’t find any of this conspicuous or unsightly. There are a couple of small tears to the original paper dust seal on back. ARTIST’S BIO: From Askart: (Biography from Vogt Auction Texas:) Born and growing up in Houston, Texas, Mark was encouraged by his family to artistic expression. Music and art became his main focus and Mark entered Sam Houston State University as a music major. During this time, Mark met Glenn Bahm, a portrait artist who ignited his curiosity in painting and it took center-stage in his life. He studied the style, color and technique of masters such as Julian Onderdonk, Isaac Levitan, George Inness, and Willard Metcalf. These painters inspired his own artistic temperament and outlook leading him to change his major to art. He graduated with a BFA degree in 1977. Inspired by the scenery and quality of the silvery light of the Texas Hill Country, Mark moved to Fredericksburg Texas in 1983 where he lived for 33 years. Today Mark calls Austin, Texas his home since the first of 2017. For the past 40 years he has participated in numerous one man and group gallery shows, as well as in museum exhibitions, throughout the country. In 1991 the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. invited Mark’s participation in showing one of his paintings in their “Texas Festival” celebrating the Arts of Texas. He was selected for the top 100 in the nationally recognized 2005 “Arts for the Parks” and the top 200 in 2006. In 2007, Mark won the Best of Show and in 2009, theArtists Choice awards at the Briscoe Western Art Museum Night of Artists show in San Antonio, Texas. He was a Guest Artist at the 2009 Maynard Dixon Country invitational show in Mt Carmel, Utah. Mark has been featured in American Artist, Art of the West, Southwest Art, and Western Art Collector magazines . His painting El Mercado was featured on the front cover of the March 2009 issue of American Artist magazine and the April 2012 cover of Western Art Collector featuring his painting “Desert Spring”. He placed second in landscape at the ARC International Salon in 2013. Haworth is represented by InSight Gallery in Fredericksburg Texas and Collectors Covey in Dallas Texas. (Biography from Whistle Pik Galleries:) Mark Haworth was raised in an artistically talented family who has always encouraged him in his career. Mark discovered early his natural aptitude for drawing, which was practiced and trained throughout his primary and secondary school years. Several family visits to the East Coast during his childhood exposed Mark to some of the finest art museums in the U.S. After high school Mark was apprenticed by the nationally renowned portrait painter, Glenn Bahm. Glenn taught Mark that one could make a career of painting only through a sound conventional training in art fundamentals and an in-depth study of the old masters. Glenn stressed the importance of color, composition, values, and edges. Mark entered Sam Houston State University in 1973 to study classical guitar, but by his sophomore year he changed his major to art, graduating in 1977 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. After college, Mark primarily focused on commission work, painting several commissioned landscapes from Florida, Louisiana, Texas, the Southwest, and Mountain States. In the summer of 1983 Mark moved to Fredericksburg Texas. “The scenery around Fredericksburg is a constant source of inspiration. There is a beautiful quality of light here. The way this light falls on the pastoral landscape, creeks and hills spiritually moves me, so that I must capture it on canvas and paper before it all changes or disappears.” Mark regularly paints in both oils and pastels. He has participated in a number of one-man and group shows over the years. He also quotes his favorite American artist, George Inness, saying, “A work of art does not appeal to the intellect. It does not appeal to the moral sense. Its aim is not to instruct, not to edify, but to awaken an emotion. Its real greatness consists in the quality and the force of this emotion.” Mark’s work is printed by Somerset House Publishers, and his commissions include three 12-foot-long landscapes for Bank One, Oak Hill National Bank, and Frost Bank.
