This edition of Hamlet is typeset in ‘Monotype’ Baskerville with Caslon Display by Gloucester Typesetting Services, Stonehouse, Glos., printed by Hand and Eye Letterpesss, London, on Zerkall Mould-Made Paper, then bound by hand at the Craft Bindery of G. Lachenmaier, Reutlingen, Germany in Nigerian goatskin leather and hand-marbled paper by Ann Muir. It is housed alongside the Oxford University Press text with explanatory notes in burgundy buckram, all within a presentation-worthy, buckram-clad clamshell case. This copy is accompanied by the publisher’s prospectus.Edition limited to 3750 copies for sale, of which this is number 1286. 14″ X 10 1/4″. 129pp. Halfbound in deep red Nigerian goatskin over boards, with marbled paper over boards, and spine lettered in gilt, with top edge gilt and matching red silk ribbon placemarker, housed alongside the Oxford University Press text of the play with full explanatory notes (8 3/4″ X 5 5/8″, ix, 406pp.), bound in buckram with paper title label to upper board and spine lettered in gilt, all within a clamshell case bound in matching burgundy buckram with leather title label, measuring 15″ X 11″. Some faint dust spotting to bindings. Gentle bumping to corners and edges of clamshell case, with some faint dust soiling to buckram and white marks to bottom edge of lower board. The Folio Society wanted to do something unprecedented: to design an edition so pure, so simple, that the beauty of the text could be fully appreciated – an edition that would be as timeless as the text itself. What would the ideal version of Shakespeare’s works look like? What would result if simplicity and elegance were the goal rather than the dictates of fashion and cost efficiency? These were the questions The Folio Society asked when they embarked on their Letterpress Shakespeare series in 2006. The project was to occupy some of Europe’s finest book designers, typesetters, paper-makers, printers and bindersfor eight years. The starting point was the text. Rather than keep text and commentary together, they decided to put them into separate volumes. Out went the elements that clutter the page : footnotes and textual variants. All that was left was Shakespeare’s words. They decided to have the text printed by letterpress in 16-point Baskerville. The type is set in hot metal and impressed on thick, mouldmade paper. The margins are generous—over 6 centimetres—to allow the words room to breathe. The result is a simple, understated design that is a delight to read and a pleasure to hold.
